Anna Guseva (b. 1994) is a visual artist born in Russia and based in France. Personal experience is the starting point of her photographic practice. Her long-term projects investigate how social, cultural, and political forces shape and deform personal trauma.
Unable to return to her homeland, she approaches the body as the only remaining site through which these intersections and their consequences can be traced. Performative gestures and introspection through the process of self-portraiture form an essential part of her work, within which the body becomes both witness and archive.
Working frequently with constructed scenes, she creates layered spaces in which visual traces of the past that shaped the trauma coexist with the present, where that trauma has been transformed by distance and the pressure of lived reality.
